The Study Area
The aerial photo below, a current view of the river corridor of the study area, has been color coded to indicate roads (in yellow) and structures (in black). According to the septic permit data, 857 new homes have been constructed in the study area since 1969. The view illustrates the current condition typical of the valley, a relatively sparsely populated area with limited roadways and structures dominated by farmland. Homes are typically on large parcels of twenty acres or more, creating a low density pattern of sprawl. The small farming communities of Emigrant, Chicory and Pray are the only relative concentrations of homes. In addition, newer subdivisions with even less density - such as Mountain View - are visible. The scale of the photograph can be understood by the center pivots. Each of these irrigated circles is one half mile in diameter, encompassing approximately 137 acres.
