Executive Director’s Corner

August 1, 2011

I have now been your Executive Director for over a year and it has been a really great experience. I knew that this job would be a challenge and I haven’t been let down. I still get friends that ask “what do you do” and sometimes I wonder “what don’t I do”.

Even though PCEC has many official projects, and the office work to match, I try as hard as possible to promote PCEC person to person as much as I can. I love to do things like: Helping to put on a noxious weed event with the Cooperative Weed Management Area committee to help landowners identify their noxious weeds (on my weedy property); help the Joe Brooks Trout Unlimited chapter with their Kids Fishing Camp and the Yellowstone River Clean Up; become committee member for the Shields Valley Technical Advisory Committee; join TU’s national natural gas committee; and talking to the kids of Yellowstone County Guardians about the health of the Yellowstone River.

I am finding that more and more people are realizing that PCEC is here to help them find answers and solutions to their concerns. I think it’s great that we’ve been asked twice this year to present at showings of Gasland here in Park County and other groups want a representative from PCEC on their committees. I want PCEC to be a resource for everyone, something they count on, an organization they know will be there when they need us.

Those around me keep telling me, ‘Kerry take some time off.’ Easier said than done folks. Just after the 4th I told people, “I’m taking the day off unless the river catches on fire.” Well, it didn’t catch on fire but it could have with 42,000 gallons of oil spilled into it. I got on the phone and talked with friends in the Billings area that know the Yellowstone to get the skinny and let them know PCEC was there if needed. I also contacted sources with FWP and TU for the same reason. So much for my day off, but it was important. People need answers and environmental emergencies take precedence.

Whatever it takes, that’s the job. What a great job to have. Thanks for supporting PCEC!
